For all other types of breakdowns, try these pro tips to restart your device before calling our team:
- 1
Verify that the HVAC filters are clean. Replace them if they are dusty. For electronic filters, clean them according to the frequency recommended by the manufacturer.
- 2
Turn off the circuit breakers on the house’s electrical panel supplying your air conditioning or heating system for 20 minutes.
- 3
Re-open the breakers after 20 minutes.
- 4
Let the HVAC system restart by itself. This will take about 15 minutes, during which the system will perform its self-test.
- 5
Ensure the thermostat is set to the appropriate mode for the season (HEAT or COOL).
- 6
Verify that the HVAC system responds. In HEAT mode, set the thermostat 2 degrees above the actual temperature indicated. In COOL mode, set the thermostat 3 degrees below the actual temperature indicated. Wait 10 minutes before proceeding to step 9.
- 7
Oil or fuel oil system: Verify the oil level on the tank dial. Make sure you press the burner restart button only once.
- 8
Gas system: Verify the outside chimney evacuations are not obstructed by snow or ice.
- 9
Verify the air temperature from the air outlets in various rooms.
- 10
Outdoor unit completely iced over: Turn off the circuit breaker on your heat pump and set the thermostat to EM-HEAT mode. You can pour hot water on your outdoor unit to melt the ice. CAUTION: The circuit breaker must be closed. Once the unit has defrosted, turn the circuit breaker back on and let the HVAC system restart by itself. If the outdoor unit still freezes, contact our emergency service.
